Once enlisted you will be pinged for upcoming events and are eligible for a custom avatar once you reach the required rank.
If you use standalone quest‚ just join as a civilian.
However if you're mute you can join as an enlisted member but only go as far as to OR-5‚ unless you are willing to use Text-To-Speech software (the NCM bracket‚ 5 ranks in total).
