About This Group
The Sari-Kipchak Confederation rose from the golden plains of Cumania, where the steppe stretched endlessly under a sky that seemed to burn with sunlight. Their very name, Sarı Qıpchaq, meant the Yellow Kipchaks, and it was both a mark of their appearance and a symbol of their destiny. To outsiders, especially the Rus chroniclers and Byzantine envoys, they were called yellow because many among them had lighter hair and pale features, unusual for the nomads of the steppe. To the Kipchaks themselves, however, yellow was the color of the sun, of ripened gra*s, and of the center of the world, a sacred hue that bound their confederation to the eternal heavens.
