We started in southern Afghanistan in the early 1990s as a small group of religious students, gaining support by promising order after years of chaos. From our base in Kandahar, we quickly expanded to nearby towns and then moved north to capture Kabul in 1996, becoming the rulers of most of Afghanistan. Over the next few years, we consolidated power across the country, though some areas resisted. After being ousted by the U.S. in 2001, we retreated to rural and mountainous regions, staying mobile and rebuilding influence through an insurgency. When foreign forces withdrew in 2021, we moved swiftly, taking cities one by one and returning to power with a rapid takeover of Kabul and much of the country.
