About This Group
Bashar al-A*sad (born 11 September 1965) is a Syrian former politician‚ doctor and military officer who served as the president of Syria from 2000 until his overthrow in 2024 after the Syrian civil war. As president‚ A*sad was commander-in-chief of the Syrian Arab Armed Forces and secretary-general of the Central Command of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. He is the son of Hafez al-A*sad‚ who ruled Syria from 1970 to 2000.
A*sad speaks fluent English and basic conversational French‚ having studied at the Franco-Arab al-Hurriyah school in Damascus. Bashar al-A*sad is an Alawite Muslim. He has performed the hajj pilgrimage twice‚ in 1999 and in 2000.
On 23 December 2024‚ it was reported that Asma al-A*sad had filed for divorce after being dissatisfied with life in Moscow. However‚ the reports were denied by the Russian government.
According to an article from the New York Times published on 22 December 2025‚ A*sad is under 24-hour protection from the FSB and has reportedly lived in apartments under the Four Seasons before moving to the Federation Tower. He was later moved to Rublyovka.
