About This Group

Cecil Rhodes (18531902) was a British imperialist‚ businessman‚ and politician who played a major role in expanding the British Empire in southern Africa. He founded the De Beers diamond company‚ controlled much of the worlds diamond trade‚ and served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony (18901896). Rhodes was a strong believer in British colonialism and sought to establish British rule from Cape to Cairo. His legacy is controversialpraised for his economic influence but condemned for racism and exploitation. The Rhodes Scholarship‚ funded by his will‚ remains one of his most enduring contributions.
