The DDR （Deutsche Demokratische Republik）‚ or East Germany‚ was a socialist state that existed from 1949 to 1990 in the eastern part of Germany. It was formed after World War II when Germany was divided by the Allied powers. The Soviet Union controlled the eastern zone‚ while the western zones became the Federal Republic of Germany （West Germany）.

The DDR was led by the Socialist Unity Party （SED） and operated as a one-party communist state closely aligned with the Soviet Union. Its capital was East Berlin‚ and it was a member of the Warsaw Pact and Comecon.

Life in the DDR was characterized by strict government control‚ state surveillance （mainly by the Stasi‚ the secret police）‚ and limited political freedom‚ though the state provided employment‚ housing‚ and social welfare.

In 1961‚ the Berlin Wall was built to prevent East Germans from fleeing to the West. The DDR existed until 1990‚ when widespread protests and the fall of the Berlin Wall led to German reunification and the end of communist rule.
