About This Group
**VFA-34 "Blue Blasters" in 1996? A Year of Transition and Legacy**
In 1996‚ Strike Fighter Squadron 34 (VFA-34)‚ known as the "Blue Blasters‚" marked a pivotal chapter in its storied history. The year began with the squadron still designated as Attack Squadron 34 (VA-34)‚ flying the venerable Grumman A-6E Intruderthe last deployment for this iconic all-weather attack aircraft in the U.S. Navy.
Departing in January 1996 aboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) as part of Carrier Air Wing 7‚ the Blue Blasters conducted a six-month Mediterranean/Arabian Gulf cruise. They provided critical support for Operation Decisive Endeavor over Bosnia and Herzegovina (enforcing peace and no-fly zones in the post-Dayton Accord era) and Operation Southern Watch over southern Iraq (enforcing the no-fly zone and conducting patrols to contain Saddam Hussein's regime). Missions focused on close air support (CAS)‚ airborne forward air control‚ and a*sisting U.S. and United Nations forces on the ground. A highlight included the final A-6E Intruder catapult launch from the carrier on July 22‚ 1996‚ symbolizing the end of an era for the Intruder community.
Upon returning home‚ the squadron underwent its major redesignation on September 30‚ 1996‚ officially becoming **Strike Fighter Squadron 34 (VFA-34)**. This shift reflected the Navy's broader transition from dedicated attack squadrons to multirole strike fighter units. The Blue Blasters relocated to NAS Cecil Field‚ Florida‚ and immediately began transitioning to the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet‚ embracing its enhanced air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities.
