About This Group
Federal government? More than the White House and Congress ...The U.S. government is a constitutional federal republic‚ divided into three separate branchesLegislative (Congress)‚ Executive (President)‚ and Judicial (Courts)to ensure checks and balances‚ with power shared between the national (federal) government and individual state governments. It's a system where citizens elect representatives to make laws (Congress)‚ the President enforces them (Executive)‚ and the courts interpret them (Judicial)‚ all under the supreme law of the U.S. Constitution.
The Three Branches of Government
Legislative (Congress)? Makes laws; composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Executive (President)? Implements and enforces laws; includes the President‚ Vice President‚ and various agencies.
Judicial (Courts)? Interprets laws; headed by the Supreme Court‚ it ensures laws align with the Constitution.
Key Principles
Federalism? Power is divided between the federal government and state governments‚ with powers not given to the federal government reserved for the states or the people (10th Amendment).
Checks and Balances? Each branch has powers to limit the other two‚ preventing any one branch from becoming too powerful (e.g.‚ President vetoes laws‚ Senate confirms judges).
Constitutional Republic? The government is based on the Constitution‚ the supreme law‚ and power ultimately rests with the people who elect officials.
Levels of Government
Federal? Handles national issues‚ foreign policy‚ and interstate commerce.
State? Governs within individual states‚ modeled after the federal system.
Local? Municipalities (cities‚ towns) manage local services like police‚ parks‚ and public works‚ with power granted by the state.
