About This Group
Morute‚ a name combining the words morbid and cute‚ is an aesthetic created in the early 2010s. It expresses the contrast between hyper-femininity and softness of childhood in the past with darker imagery drawn from true crime and Regional Gothic elements.

In the community‚ users often use it as an outlet for expressing trauma‚ especially related to eating disorders and child abuse. The community largely developed from the music of Nicole Dollanganger and influential photographers such as Jess Woods and milliedollgraves‚ who have since deactivated.

Many visuals suggest physical abuse‚ sexual a*sault or molestation‚ emotional abuse‚ self-destruction‚ religious trauma‚ and physical disability. The child-like imagery reflects a desire to return to a childhood that was taken away. Christian‚ angelic‚ and cute motifs idealize purity and innocence.

Religious guilt is a common theme‚ with a longing to reach Heaven but feeling unable due to being dirtied by trauma. This creates some overlap with Catholic Horror. Themes of dirtiness and rot appear frequently.

Poverty in small-town Americana also features‚ influenced by horror movies and the idea of home as sullied and unsafe.

Morute is a precursor to Traumacore. Traumacore represents convergent evolution‚ where two aesthetics express similar ideas but the later community is mostly unaware of the earlier influences.

The aesthetic has largely declined in popularity due to Traumacores rise‚ the insular nature of the community‚ mental recovery among key figures‚ and debate over the aestheticization of dark themes.

The community does not require members to have personal trauma. Many are drawn simply to the contrast between cutesy‚ girly‚ childish styles and dark‚ creepy Gothic visuals. There is no expectation to share or discuss past experiences.
